Taber, Jean Hower Endowment for Scholarships

Jean Hower Taber was the daughter of John B. Hower and the granddaughter of Milton Otis and Blanche Eugenia Bruot Hower and the niece of Grace Hower Crawford. Milton Otis was a graduate of Buchtel College, now »ð±¬ÉçÇø and a member of the Lone Star Fraternity. In the spirit of her grandfather and the Hower Family, Jean has been an exceedingly generous benefactor not only for Hower House, but also for »ð±¬ÉçÇø and its students.

Jean Hower Taber graduated from Hathaway Brown School, received a degree from Colby Junior College and was formerly a research technician at University Hospitals. Following World War II, Jean enlisted in the Red Cross and was stationed in Germany supporting troops during the occupation. Jean, along with her late husband, Benjamin Charles Taber, was a lifelong philanthropist. They volunteered and supported important causes, such as Cleveland Museum of Natural History, Society for the Blind and Meals- on-Wheels.

Jean enjoyed travelling, was a stalwart advocate and lover of animals, and a lifelong advocate for higher education. She felt education had the power to change lives and help others better themselves. Jean received an honorary doctorate degree from UA in 2004. Jean passed away on July 21, 2017 and will be missed greatly by her many family and friends.

Through an estate gift, Jean Hower Taber established this endowment to provide scholarship support for students in two areas that were important and meaningful to Jean - Honors and Audiology. Annual distributions from The Jean Hower Taber Endowment for Scholarships will be allocated as follows: with 50 percent to The Jean Hower Taber Honors Scholarship and 50 percent to The Jean Hower Taber Audiology Scholarship.

The Jean Hower Taber Honors Scholarship:
The Jean Hower Taber Honors Scholarship ls for students in the Drs. Gary and Pamela Williams Honors College. Recipients must be members of the Williams Honors College and meet all requirements of that distinction. Scholarships are renewable. Selection will be made by the leadership of the Williams Honors College in collaboration with the University Scholarship Committee as needed. If for any reason the Honors College should cease to exist, the scholarship is to be administered as a general scholarship.

The Jean Hower Taber Audiology Scholarship:
The Jean Hower Taber Audiology Scholarship is for students in the Audiology program at »ð±¬ÉçÇø. Scholarships are renewable. Selection will be made by the leadership of the Audiology program in collaboration with the University Scholarship Committee as needed.

Jean used the services of the Speech and Hearing Clinic and found the students to be bright, personable and dedicated to their chosen profession. For this reason, she has singled out students in the Audiology program to benefit from her endowment. If for any reason this academic area should cease to exist, the scholarship is to be administered as a general scholarship.
